What to know about laminate

Laminate flooring delivers the visual appeal of hardwood and stone at a cost that fits a broader range of commercial project budgets. For general contractors managing multi-unit builds, property managers overseeing office renovations, and business owners refreshing a retail or professional space, laminate provides an attractive, durable surface with a fast installation timeline.

When the budget has a ceiling but the standard cannot, laminate is often the right answer. ACS has been helping commercial clients make smart flooring decisions for over 30 years. We source commercial-grade laminate, manage installation, and give you one point of contact from start to finish, so your project stays on schedule and on budget.

Key Features of Laminate Flooring

Wood-Look and Stone-Look Aesthetics

High-definition imaging layers produce realistic wood and stone visuals at a fraction of the cost of natural materials, making laminate a practical solution for design-forward commercial spaces on constrained budgets.

AC Rating System

Commercial laminate products are rated on the AC scale from AC3 through AC5, corresponding to light commercial through heavy institutional use. Proper specification by traffic class is critical to performance.

Scratch & Dent Resistance

The aluminum oxide wear layer on commercial-grade laminate is harder than many LVP products at comparable price points, providing strong scratch resistance in moderate-traffic environments.

Click-Lock Installation

Glueless floating installation reduces project timelines and minimizes disruption to active commercial facilities.

Consistent Appearance

Unlike natural materials, laminate does not vary between planks or tiles, producing a uniform, predictable aesthetic across the entire installation.

Low Maintenance

Routine sweeping and damp mopping is all that is required. No sealing, waxing, or stripping.

Pros

  • Lower installed cost than hardwood, engineered wood, or stone
  • Strong scratch resistance in appropriate commercial applications
  • Wide design variety: multiple species looks, plank widths, and tile formats
  • Fast installation with minimal business disruption
  • Simple ongoing maintenance

Cons

  • Not waterproof: moisture infiltration at seams can cause swelling and delamination
  • Not recommended for restrooms, kitchens, or high-humidity commercial environments
  • Surface damage is not repairable: affected planks must be replaced
  • Can produce hollow sound underfoot without quality underlayment installation

Frequently Asked Questions about Laminate

Commercial-grade laminate rated AC3 or higher is appropriate for light to moderate commercial environments including private offices, retail showrooms, conference rooms, and professional service spaces. It is not recommended for high-traffic institutional environments, moisture-prone areas, or spaces where the floor is subject to heavy equipment or rolling loads.

LVP is waterproof and more appropriate for moisture-present environments. Laminate offers strong scratch resistance and a lower entry price point in some product tiers but cannot perform in wet conditions. In dry, moderate-traffic commercial settings, both are viable options. For environments with any moisture risk, LVP is the recommended specification.

The AC rating system rates laminate for traffic class. AC3 covers light commercial use such as private offices and conference rooms. AC4 covers general commercial use including retail and open offices. AC5 is rated for heavy commercial and institutional use. Always specify based on the actual traffic demands of the space.
